Now that I constantly post about trucks that I’m thinking of buying. I will now post about trucks that I have eliminated from my search.
For gas powered trucks, I’m only considering 2007+ year trucks and for diesels, 2001+
Here are the ones that I will not buy for various reasons...
1. The Nissan Titan
Years: (2008-2011)
Engine: 5.6 V8
Why I Eliminated Them: Multiple reliability concerns from multiple systems; from the transmission to the transfer case to the engine. Pretty much everything and anything that can be expensive. Titan trucks seem to be the cheapest used, that being what drew me to the Titans in the first place. But I ultimately eliminated them due to reliability concerns.
2. The Dodge Ram 1500
Years: (2007-2011)
Engine: 5.7 Hemi V8
Why I Eliminated Them: I’m not a huge fan of the styling, combined with multiple horror stories from multiple people about reliability concerns. Pricing seems a bit cheaper than most other Ford and GM trucks; but again I think this is partly the reliability concerns coming into play.
Think I shoulod give any of them a second look? Let me know!
My frontrunners as of now are the 2008+ Tundra with the 5.7 V8 and the 2001+ F-250 6.0/7.3 Diesel.

Yes! Negative jkm posts are BACK!

Got to balance it out a little bit!
And I do believe that your schedule is a little bit out of order.

Where is the Tundra on your thinking about list? My dad has a 2014(same truck as the 07+ except the body and a the interior but I’ve driven the previous gen)

It’s on there! So far, it’s acutally turning out to be the best buy out of the bunch. The GMT 800 Silverado has a horrible interior and I’m not a fan of the F-150s of the time.
This is only the list of trucks that I will not buy.

Yeah I tried to make sure I put that in the comment that I got this list. In case you were wondering
Pros:
Gas Mileage (Not a diesel but it will get 10 mpg no matter how much you tow)
Toyota reliability (but check cons)
Interior is pretty nice. We have the ‘14 Platinum so it’s super nice but in general they keep it up.
It tows really nice with the 5.7
You can sleep in it - had ours 1 week before towing the FJ40 32+ hours /3 days to California
The design is really strong. The sheer presence and size is fantastic.
Could be worth spending the extra money and getting a 2014 or newer
Cons:
Gas Mileage (13 around town, 17 or so highway)
Air Pump will probably go out. Don’t get a 2007, first year bugs an that was historically one of the worst years ever for Toyota.
Cruise Control while towing can get janky and down shift into 3rd gear while at highway speeds on rolling hills
Hard to park. Get used to backing in everywhere.
I’ll try to think of some other things.

Thanks for the rundown!
I’d probably end up with a 2008 model with 100-something thousand miles on it. I’m more looking to use it for truck things, rather than daily drive it. Either way, I have a really short commute so I don’t really have to worry about fuel economy for the time being at least.
And also luckily, I literally have never used cruise control. I’m not sure why, I just never do it.
Another, another thing would be that I’d probably need to retrofit a never nav system into it with a reverse camera and such. I’d probably get used to something that big but still.

Would you be looking at a SR5, Limited, or Platinum?
![]() 08/16/2016 at 21:51 |

Sr5 probably, because cheaper.

At first, I wasn’t too crazy about the console shifter. But the obscene amounts of storage everywhere make up for it.

Cummins. Put a 12V Cummins on that list. Best truck ever.

I’d say get the Tundra. And totally not just because we had one from 2008-2014.

Most of those in my budget range either have really high mileage, are rusty as hell, have “I’D RATHER BE CUMMIN THAN STROKIN” decals on the back window, or all three of those things.

Pull the trigger but promise me you will replace the grill with the classic “T O Y O T A” insert if you can find one.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:02 |

Ooohhhhhh, I would love to find one of those. That would look fucking badass.

if you think a Ford with the 6.0 is one of your frontrunners, you really need to back off and check yourself.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:10 |

I’d factor bulletproofing it into the price, but I’d much rather just find a pretty nice 7.3 truck.

This... but with the Toyota grill... This is not a brodozer.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:13 |

Buy a Scania. They're awesome, and you'll be the only one in your neighborhood who has one.

Worth it.

good suggestion ps9

That’s pretty much exactly what I was thinking. Except with different wheels. Kinda like this, except with even different wheels haha.

nono
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:19 |

Be careful with reaching brodozer heights. 3" lift or less.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:25 |
|
I’d probably just go with a 3 inch lift. Nothing too extreme...
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:27 |
|
That’s a good call. Keep it simple and tasteful
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:30 |

Yup, that's what I'm going for.
![]() 08/16/2016 at 22:30 |

Yesyes. Cummins is best diesel.

ID RATHER BE STROKIN THAN GETTIN RAMMED
![]() 08/17/2016 at 00:21 |

Why? avoid 03 and your fine. Kept stock they are fine if you are not going to run a tuner adding a bigger oil cooler and delete EGR and all that’s left is regular maintenance.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 00:22 |

best truck if you want to replace a tranny every 50,000 miles
![]() 08/17/2016 at 04:33 |
|
Bulletproofing them ain’t exactly cheap. You want to buy a truck and then pay for a lot of “cab off” engine work?
![]() 08/17/2016 at 06:44 |
|
This is the problem with 15 year old, pre-emissions diesel trucks.
There may be one out there that you will find that was owned by an old guy that drove it 5k miles per year and washed it every week. It will look like new and it will cost almost as much as a new one.
The alternative is one that is completely beat to death, probably by several different rednecks at this point.
If you want a diesel, by a late model. If you want cheaper, a 5 year old gas truck will be better than a 15 year old diesel.

1. The Nissan Titan
Years: (2008-2011)
Why these years and not the 11-16? Age? Or is there something they actually changed on the Titan in 2012 to make it better?
![]() 08/17/2016 at 10:26 |
|
Those are the years I'm looking into that apply to my budget.
![]() 08/17/2016 at 10:28 |

Well you can do head gaskets and such without pulling the cab.
